Joyce Long Kerns passed away on Friday, January 31, 2020. She was born in Muncie, Indiana to Homer M. and Kathleen R. Long, who preceded her in death. She attended Central High school and IPFW in Fort Wayne. Surviving are her children Tina L. Bopp (Robert), Scott M. Kerns (Brenda) and Stephanie Kerns, along with her special niece, Amanda Traylor. Also surviving are her grandchildren Shianne Baldwin, Dylan Kerns, Lillian and Layla Bopp, Brothers Robert (Jill) Long, David Long and sister Kay (Jim) Porter.

Joyce loved life! Her smile could light up a room. Her laughter was contagious. Her friendships were numerous and genuine. She was a talented artist and photographer. She especially loved sunsets. Her favorite place was Ludington, Michigan, where she vacationed every year.

In lieu of traditional funeral services, we will be hosting a celebration of life to honor her at a later date. Memorials may be made to Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Fort Wayne. To sign the online guestbook, go to

Although I didn't see Joyce often after I left Fort Wayne 12 years ago, I continued to follow her on Facebook -- photographs of sunsets taken from her balcony, humorous comments on many topics, her zest for life. We've lost her all too soon. R.I.P. Joyce!

I remember Joyce standing there looking up at me with that fighting spark in her eyes pushing back on some of my youthful proclamations while at ITT. If she thought something wrong was said, she would let you know. What a strong and smiling personality. I pray that the family will be comforted by the very real presence of Christ.

Joyce was always very friendly to me and I always looked forward to seeing her behind her desk when I came to the office. Such things make a difference to employees and students who may be having a bad day and I think she was aware of that. She made a difference.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Joyce. She was a second mom to many of us who lived on Edgewater back in the good ole days. Spent many hours at her house with Stephanie when we were kids and I have such great memories. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family
