Obituary for Virginia "Ginger" Ann Hergel (Nelson)

Virginia "Ginger" Hergel, age 69, died peacefully at home in Fort Wayne on Monday, November 7, 2022 after a recent diagnosis of cancer. She was surrounded by family. Born in Waco, Texas, she was the daughter of Mary and Joseph Nelson Jr., who affectionately called her Ginger, a name that remained with her for her entire life.

A strong-willed, independent woman who embraced her southern upbringing, Ginger lived a modest and practical life on her own terms. For many years, she accompanied her husband as they worked as long-haul truck drivers and traveled the United States with CB radio handles of Yogi and Boo Boo. In her retirement, Ginger built a booming business of selling merchandise online. She formed personal connections and friendships with anyone who came into her life, and was never lacking for entertaining conversation. Her lifelong love of animals ranged from her pampered pet dogs, to ducks and rabbits she fed from her patio.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 17 years, Douglas Hergel and her beloved Miniature Schnauzer, Heidi. She is survived by her daughter, Christy Grabowski (John) of Fort Wayne, Indiana, her two grandsons, Andrew and Austin, and her two sisters Edna Medrano (Juan) of Leander, Texas and Mary Schwausch (Gilbert) of Walburg, Texas.

The family is planning celebrations of Ginger's life in Fort Wayne and in Texas, and will post more information once plans are finalized. In lieu of flowers, Ginger’s family would appreciate contributions toward expenses related to funeral and memorial services - donations can be made at https://everloved.com/life-of/virginia-hergel/. All additional proceeds will be donated to Stillwater Hospice and Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana.
