Obituary for Sara Josephine Hacker

Sara McCarthy Hacker died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on October 14th, 2022. She was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on December 10, 1941 to the late Frank and Rosemary (Nagelsen) McCarthy. Sara remained a lifelong resident of Fort Wayne where she married the love of her life, Hank, and raised their three children. She graduated from the University of Saint Francis with a psychology degree and went on to teach in the Catholic school system.

Sara volunteered through Junior League and was a co-leader in the Girl Scouts organization. Sara, Hank, and their family spent summers at their cottage on Lake Wawasee. During the winter, the two enjoyed their condominium on Siesta Key in Florida. Their children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends were the central focus of Sara and Hank’s lives.

Sara was warm-hearted and sunny and had a personality that drew people to her. She listened to everyone and offered her wise advice. Sara had the most positive outlook especially in the face of obstacles. Everyone felt joy and happiness in her company. She was the embodiment of her favorite color, yellow.

Sara is survived by her children, Jim (Julie) Hacker, Liz (Bob) Hathaway, both of Fort Wayne, and Mike (Laura) Hacker of Greenwood, IN; eight grandchildren, Matthew, Madison (Andrew) Green, Ethan, Joe, Meagan, Tatum, Mackenzie, and Chase; two sisters, Mari (David) Crumb and Kara (Michael) Mullen; three nieces; two nephews; and five great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry J. Hacker.

A private celebration of Sara’s life will be held in the spring. Arrangements entrusted by Fairhaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
