Obituary for Niles Richard Huser

N. Richard “Dick” Huser died peacefully at his home on February 10, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lois Ann Huser (Lagemann), and his three children, Richard A. Huser (Laura), Rhonda Huser Whitacre (Jeff), and Ronald E. Huser (Laura), as well as six grandchildren: Shannon Sperber, Elizabeth Huser Grossnickle, Erica VanCamp Dice, Sarah VanCamp Shisler, Michael Huser, Emery Campbell Rust and nine great-grandchildren.
Dick was born in 1931 in Ossian, Indiana as the only child of Roy and Mildred Huser. He graduated from North Side High School and attended Indiana University before marrying Lois in 1952. He joined the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of Second Lieutenant after attending Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia. He proudly served his country and was deployed to Korea, earning the Bronze Star for his conduct in the war.
Dick’s professional career included nearly every possible position at Transport Motor Express “TMX”, the private company founded by his dad, Roy. The two of them grew the trucking company into a carrier with 15 terminals serving 8 states. They sold TMX to Essex Wire prior to United Technologies’ acquisition of Essex. Dick then served as a Vice-President of United Technologies until his retirement from the company in 1976.
The remainder of Dick’s working career was spent as a licensed real estate agent focused on commercial real estate. He also served for many years on the Board of Directors for Garrett State Bank and became an avid golfer, an interest that he developed at middle age.
Dick’s service to the community included active membership and various leadership positions at Trinity English Lutheran Church. He also volunteered at Parkview North Hospital, as well as delivering blood for the Red Cross. But, Dick’s most impactful contribution to the community likely came through the Huser Charitable Foundation which he and Lois established in 1985. Over the past four decades, the Foundation has contributed more than $1,000,000 to charitable organizations throughout the United States with a special emphasis in Fort Wayne, particularly benefiting the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo and Trinity English Lutheran Church.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity English Lutheran Church, 450 W. Washington Boulevard, at 4:00 pm on March 14, 2023. The service will be preceded by a visitation at the Church beginning at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Huser Charitable Foundation, 18912 Hand Road, Huntertown, IN 46740, or any charity of one’s choice in Dick’s name.
