Obituary for Michael Matthew Mason

Michael Matthew Mason, 59, went peacefully to his heavenly home on Saturday, March 11th, 2023.
Michael was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 15, 1963. He lived with his parents, splitting time between Fort Pierce, Florida and the family cabin in Michigan, until 2009, when he moved to live with his brother, Daniel, and his family in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He had the most joyful spirit and always lived life to the fullest, whether singing along to show tunes or dancing during Sunday worship. Everyone who met Michael was blessed by his natural ability to make others smile and laugh. He was able to bring joy to an entire room, and found the greatest happiness in doing so.

Michael lived his life through stories and music. It defined Michael’s life in the way he expressed his love for others, and it allowed people to express their love for him. He would often reference any one of his 600+ movies and shows in his collection by singing lyrics—his favorite way to communicate and build bonds with those he loved.

In his memory, we share lyrics with you from one of his favorite songs, which provided comfort throughout the most difficult times:

"Someone to care for, to be there for,
I have you…
Someone to do for, to muddle through for
I have you…
Someone to share joy or despair with, whichever betides you.
Life becomes a chore, unless you’re living for someone to tend to, be a friend to.
I have you…"
— “You Two,” from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Michael was predeceased by his parents George and Dolores. He is survived by his brothers Daniel (Cheryl) Mason and Patrick (Phyllis) Mason, his sister Cindy (Jim) Nicholson, his nieces Melissa Frisby, Jessica (Tanner) Hile, and his nephews Matthew Mason, Adam Mason, Corey Nicholson, and Jake Nicholson.

A celebration of Michael’s life will be a private gathering for close friends and family and will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make a donation in honor of Michael to GiGi's Playhouse or another charity supporting acceptance, empowerment, and support of those with different abilities.
