Obituary for Marilyn L. Bustamante

Marilyn L. Bustamante, 76, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023. She was born to the late James N. and Emma (Bloemker) Gilbert on May 11, 1947 in Findlay, OH. Marilyn was known for her incredible and outlandish sense of humor. She brought joy to all who knew her. Marilyn had the unique ability to find laughter even in the darkest of times, a trait that lives on in her children. Marilyn was an avid cook and baker. She became known for her Christmas goodie packages of baked goods and chocolates and her tamale recipe. There was no end to Marilyn’s caring and generosity. She ‘adopted’ many neighborhood kids feeding them meals and treats. They knew they could always pop in on Marilyn for something to eat and as she got to know them, she would be sure keep their favorites on hand.

In the 1980’s, Marilyn accepted the position as jail commander with the Adams County Sheriff's Department, making her the first female jail commander in the state of Indiana. While this was a trailblazing career move, Marilyn was very humble about this accomplishment as she was always one to just complete the job at hand. Marilyn finished her career as a Quality Inspector at Parker Hannifin (Areoquip), before retiring in 2009.

Marilyn is survived by her children, Tonya Thompson, Heather Lytle (Chapman), and Jose (Betty) Bustamante. In addition, she is survived by two grandchildren Keith and Kameron Miner, two great-grandchildren, and three sisters.
Along with her parents, Marilyn was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
