Obituary for Lynda K. Pontenberg (Loterbour)

Lynda Kay (Loterbour) Pontenberg passed away in the early morning hours of March 17, 2021. She was born at St. Joseph Hospital in Mason City, IA on March 23, 1940 to Ruste and Veloris Loterbour. She spent her childhood playing golf and teaching swimming at the Girl Scout Camp in Clear Lake, IA.
Lynda graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1958. In her high school years, she was a member of the high school’s golf team, where they placed 3rd and 4th in different years at the Iowa State High School Golf Championship. After high school, she graduated from Mason City Junior College in 1960. Lynda received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Illinois State University in 1969, and her Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University at South Bend in 1983. She spent 35 years teaching elementary education, primarily first and second grade at various schools in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Indiana.
On August 12, 1961, Lynda married Duane Pontenberg at St. Joseph’s Church in Mason City, IA. While raising their three children, Lynda and Duane lived in Mason City, IA, Normal, IL, Madison, WI, Elkhart, IN, and Fort Wayne IN.
After retiring from teaching in 2000, Lynda and Duane spent five months every year in Florida where they enjoyed living in various retirement communities and made many lasting friendships. In 2008, Lynda and Duane relocated to Fort Wayne, IN. During her retirement, she enjoyed playing golf, a sport which she loved, crocheting, going to the movies, swimming, and reading.
Lynda is survived by her husband of 59 years, Duane Pontenberg. She is also survived by her three children, Kim (Dennis) Raymond of St. Petersburg, FL, Ruste (Monica) Pontenberg of Ft. Wayne, Julie (Ron) Peck of Las Vegas, NV, and son-in-law Doug Foster of Lakewood Ranch, FL. She also leaves behind four grandchildren, Drew (Jesse) Wildman Foster of New York, NY, Mike Foster of Los Angeles, CA, Reed (Katie) Pontenberg, and Lauren Pontenberg, all of Ft. Wayne, IN. Lynda also has a great-grand daughter, Rafael Wildman Foster, who was born in January. She was expecting a great-grandson (Leo) in April.
The family would like thank the staff at Lutheran Life Villages Pine Valley for their excellent care of Lynda over the last two plus years, as well as Visiting Nurse Hospice for their care at the end of her life. Mass of Christian Burial is 2:00 pm, Monday, March 22, 2021 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1502 E. Wallen Rd., with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm on Sunday, March 21, 2021 at Fairhaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 6557 N. Clinton St.
