Obituary for Kent Vaun Keener

Kent Vaun Keener, 85, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, transitioned from this life to life with Christ on the morning of December 16, 2020. Born in Huntertown, Indiana, Kent was the son of the late Rutherford and Golda Keener. Kent graduated from Huntertown High School, Huntertown, Indiana, and earned his BS degree from Indiana University. Kent was employed by International Harvester, Fort Wayne, for more than 20 years; Volvo-White, Pulaski, Virginia, for a decade and a half; and the final 18 years of life as Care Pastor at Brookside Church. Kent was an active church member over the course of his life and served as Sunday school superintendent, Deacon, Elder and Care Pastor. He was particularly energized by his most recent role as Care Pastor wherein he served in visitation to sick and shut-in, pastor to seniors, and friend and encourager to many. His hobbies included spending time with family and friends, an avid and lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and Indiana Hoosiers basketball, reading, taking walks, and spending time with his wife, Barbara. Kent is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara (Streitmatter) Keener; children, Gretchen (Dennis) Zimmerman, Hans (Barbara) Keener, Thad (Peggy) Keener, Ryan (Jennifer) Keener; sisters, Maryann Roth of Morton, Illinois, and Jayne (John) Bockman of Angola, Indiana; grandchildren, Nathan (Tracy), Adrienne (Chris Urschel), Reid (Ashlee) Zimmerman, Dauthan (Amanda), Wyatt (Whitney) Keener, Rudy, Samuel Phoebe, and Noah Keener; great-grandchildren, Elliott, Gavin and Mya Zimmerman, Haven and Adalynn Urschel, and Harlow Keener; and sister-in-law, Jeannie Keener. Kent was preceded in death by his son, Dawthan Keener; brothers, Ned and Burl Keener. Service is 11 am, Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at Brookside Church, 6102 Evard Road, with calling one hour prior. Calling also at Brookside Church on Monday, December 21, 2020 from 5 pm to 8 pm. For the safety of all that attend Kent’s services please practice social distancing and wear a face covering.
