Obituary for John Marvin Dalton

There are no goodbyes for us; wherever you are, you will always be in our hearts. On June 15, 2023 John Marvin Dalton passed away. John was born in Marion, Indiana on March 25, 1934 to Bertha (Long) and Cecil Dalton. He graduated from Mississinewa High School in 1953 & the University of Michigan Ross School of Business in 1957. Preceding him in death was his wife of 50 years Nancy Hanley. They married in 1957. Also preceding him in death were his brother, Ernest Dalton and sister, Mary Lou Mason. He is survived by his children: Daphne (David) Hess, Blacklick, Ohio & Syd (Kerry) Minter, Ligonier, Indiana. Grandchildren Eric Hess (Blacklick, OH) & Kylie Hess, (Rockville, MD), Jack (Brittany) Minter, Ryan Minter, & Kara Minter. Sister Susie (Audley) Cragun (Lakeland, FL). Minter grandchildren Arianna & Jack Jr.

John was an extremely likeable man. It was said that the only stranger to John was the person he never met. His 41 years in banking and outgoing personality helped him to be successful. He was the number one supporter of his two daughters & their spouses. He adored his grandchildren & was never shy about telling anyone about their accomplishments. John had a huge heart. He helped so many people throughout his life. Both he & Nancy were extremely giving & believed in “paying it forward.” John’s life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, loved beyond words & will be missed deeply by his family.

In high school John was a delegate to Boys State & received an Academic Achievement Award; was selected as Grant County’s Athlete of the Year (1951) & participated on the varsity track, baseball, football, & basketball teams. At the University of Michigan, he played baseball for the Wolverines his freshman and sophomore years.

John served in the United States Air Force Reserves 1957- 1962. He spent his career in banking at Marion (IN) National Bank (1958 – 1962) & First Federal Savings Bank/Mutual Federal from 1962 – 1999. He served as the President, CEO, & Chairman of the Board. Other acolytes include: Life Member University of Michigan Letterman’s Club, Life Member University of Michigan Alumni Club, Member American Community Bankers Mortgage Comm., Member of Indiana Bankers 40 Year Club, Marion (IN) School Board 1976-1979 & President 1978, Director Main Street Marion, Director Marion Credit Bureau, Founding Member/President Junior Achievement Board, President Sertoma Club, President Metro Exchange Club. He retained memberships at: Aero Club, Mecca Club, Meshingomesia Country Club, Tippecanoe Lake Country Club, Lake Wawasee Property Owners, Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation, Director and Life Member Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum.

John established the Teaching Excellence Award for Elementary Teachers in the Mississinewa Schools through Grant County Community Foundation. He became a Master Gardener in 2007 & Co-Chaired the Kosciusko County Garden Walk- Summer 2009 & Member Syracuse Garden Club.

Services will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023. Calling at noon followed by his Memorial Service at 1:00 pm. Arrangements are being handled by FairHaven Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 6557 N. Clinton Street, Ft Wayne, IN.
