Obituary for Eleanor "Joy" Johnson

Eleanor “Joy” Johnson, 86, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2022. Born in Weymouth, MA, Eleanor was a daughter of the late Albert Maslen and Ruby (Smith) Bourns. She graduated from Braintree High School and earned her Associates degree from Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene and Bachelors degree in Social Work from University of Southern Florida. She worked as a dental hygienist in the Boston area and later as a social worker in Florida. Eleanor Joy married Roland on June 2, 1956 in England while he served in the US Air Force. After starting a family, they relocated to Florida, where she is known by most as Joy.

She loved and enjoyed people, making friends quickly wherever she went. She was very involved in her family, her church, and her community - joining many organizations and groups. Everyone always commented on her lively spirit, silly sense of humor, contagious laugh, heart of compassion and ability to connect. She found a way to put everyone at ease, no matter what they were going through. “Joy’s name fits her perfectly,” was often heard. In her later years she spent time living in New Hampshire near her daughter’s family and most recently in Indiana.

Eleanor Joy’s favorite place on Earth was Brightwater, Maine on the New Meadows River along coast. From early childhood she and her family spent summer vacations there and loved gathering for picnics, boat races, hikes, lobster bakes, barn dances, game nights and hymn sings. She loved being out in God’s creation, breathing in the salty sea air, feeding the birds and wildlife, working in her wildflower garden, and admiring the flora and fauna along the path.

Surviving are her daughter, Linda “Su” Geiger and husband Phil Geiger; brother Eric Maslen;
grandchildren Andreas, Devereux, Mariah, Leanna and Denis and spouses; seven great grandchildren; 13 nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. Joy was preceded in death by her husband Roland, son Gary Johnson, and sister Mary Hobart.

Special thanks to the folks at All American (Londonderry, NH), StoryPoint Sr, Living (Fort Wayne, IN), and Eleos Hospice whose gentle, loving care of Mom meant so much to us!

A memorial service/gathering will be held this summer in Brightwater, Maine.
