Eleanor A. Cranmer, 97, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Born in Camden, New Jersey, Eleanor was the first-born child of the late John and Anna (Deery) Stanton. She attended Camden Catholic High School, where she graduated in 1945. In 1949, Eleanor met the love of her life, Bill Cranmer, at a farewell party for a mutual friend. Soon after, Bill left for college in Indiana, and the two corresponded through letters for two years. In 1951, the couple married, and Eleanor moved to Indiana. They remained happily married for 42 years, until Bill passed in 1993. In 1960, Eleanor and Bill adopted their first daughter, Kathy. Eleanor gave birth to Nancy a year later in 1961, and to their third daughter, Julie, in 1966. She always said raising children was the happiest time of her life.

During her working years, Eleanor was a bookkeeper for multiple businesses and organizations. She was passionate about education, also working as a Sunday school teacher, note taker for Ivy Tech, and as part of the Literacy Council and League of the Blind. She loved being active in her community, participating in the Indiana State Federation of Poetry Clubs, Fort Wayne Writers Forum, Fort Wayne Woman’s Club, Community Writers, Allen County Historical Society, and PEO Sisterhood Chapter CX. She was also active in the Catholic church. She was an avid and talented poet, and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, and reading. Eleanor had a sharp wit, great sense of humor, and often described herself as a “joyful optimist.”
