Obituary for Donald Lee Schenkel

Donald Lee Schenkel, 72, passed away Friday, December 11, 2020. Born in Huntington, Indiana, Donald was the son of the late Charles and Ruth Schenkel. Donald graduated from Huntington High School and earned his bachelors degree in vocational education from Southern Illinois University. Donald served our country as a US Navy Vietnam War veteran serving our country from 1967 until 1989. Donald earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer and received numerous awards while serving. He was a member of St. Michael Lutheran Church serving as a trustee. Donald was very socially involved and engaged in the Fort Wayne Community. He was an active volunteer for the Sea Cadets, USO, and at the Unity Performing Arts Foundation. His strong faith in the Lord and love for others will be missed. He loved being husband, father, and grandpa to his family. He served as North Side High School’s Bowling Coach during his daughter Lily's tenure at North Side. Donald was an avid woodworker, bicyclist, loved canoeing on the rivers, and was a wonderful cook and better baker. Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Cathi Schenkel; children, William Schenkel, Kristopher Schenkel, Teresa (Craig) Scruggs, Raymond (Emily) Schenkel, Lily Schenkel; grandchildren, Ian, Auden, Wyatt, Kylee, Lillian, Riley, and Leah. Donald was preceded in death by his first wife, Nyla (Duesler) Schenkel; and son, Marc Schenkel. Service is 3 pm, Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at St. Michael Lutheran Church, 2131 Getz Road, with calling from 1:30 pm until the services. Memorials may be made to USO.
