Daniel Kent Thiel, 79, of Garrett, IN died September 4, 2018. Dan was born in Fort Wayne to the late Lewis Thiel and Valera Opliger. He was a North Side graduate, a marine reserve for 8 years and a NIPSCO service man for 34 years. Dan and his wife, Mary lived in a saltbox house in the woods that they built together. He was a quiet man who wrote poetry, told a good story, thought about life and his fellow man. His wit and humor will be missed by his family. Dan is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Kahn); son, Dan, Jr. (Karen); daughter, Denise (Mark) Cleveland; grandchildren, Courtney (Dameon) Rinehold, Whitney Cleveland, Derek Thiel, and Wade (Emily) Thiel; great-grandson, Corbin Rinehold; and his siblings, Jon (Margaret) Thiel, Sara (Dick) Conrow, Dave (Barb) Thiel, and Becky (Gwen) Shedd. Dan was preceded in death by his brother, Rick (Betty) Thiel. A celebration in his honor will be 1:00 pm, Sunday, October 7, 2018 at the American Legion Post 178, 515 W. 5th Ave, Garrett, IN.
