Daniel H. Muldoon Jr. passed away unexpectedly from a stroke on Monday, November 16, 2020. Born in Washington D.C., Dan was the son of the late Daniel Muldoon Sr. and Virginia Luttrell. He served our country as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Special Forces and later as a combat platoon leader in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division operating around Huế. Despite the operational territory, Dan never lost a fellow solider under his command. Lieutenant Dan was hit by shrapnel from a booby trap resulting in traumatic head, chest, stomach, and leg injuries. He defied all medical odds—not only learning to walk and talk again, but to provide empathetic support in ongoing service to other veterans. After a long recuperation, he volunteered for the American Red Cross and Catholic Social Services while earning his first master’s degree in counseling. After graduating, he worked as a National Service Officer for the Paralyzed Veterans of America in Indianapolis. Dan later returned to Fort Wayne to serve under Mayor Helmke’s Administration as the Veterans Affairs Officer. He went on to earn a second master’s degree in social work and retired from the Fort Wayne Vet Center. Among his numerous service awards, Dan was named the national Disabled Veteran of the Year by the DAV in 1991 for his unwavering dedication to serving hundreds of veterans and their families. In his spare time, this ever happy, humble man enjoyed attempting to play golf with his friends, reading, being at the beach, browsing at hardware stores, and spending time with his granddaughter. Surviving are his devoted wife of 40 years, Ann Muldoon who saw Dan as the wind beneath her wings; son, Eric (Holly) Muldoon; granddaughter, Kendall Muldoon; sister, Patt Jones; brother-in-laws, Raymond Lerch, Stephen (Jerri) Lerch; along with two nieces and three nephews. A Celebration of Dan’s Life will be held in the spring. Memorials may be made to Blessings in a Backpack of Fort Wayne to reduce hunger-free weekends for children facing food insecurity.
