Andrew Joseph Palmer was the first baby born in Fort Wayne on New Year’s Day in 1975. He died of cancer while surrounded by family and friends at his home on October 12, 2022.
His smile, laugh, kindness, generosity, and big heart drew people in, put others at ease, and created many friendships and simple, special memories. He loved a good local beer, music, live concerts, watching sports, and grilling up dinner. He loved nature – always planting flowers, growing a garden and plants, and enjoying the outdoors.
He was loved beyond measure as the firstborn son, big brother to his three siblings, and uncle/godfather to his nephews and nieces. It always felt special to be with him, and he was always there for a hug, a listening ear, or a “Love ya!” He had many friends and a wide circle who loved him as sweet and loyal “Andy.” He adored his wife and stepdaughter, and he was never more proud or happy than when he shared the news that he and Brooke were getting married.
He attended St. Joseph School, Bishop Dwenger High School, IPFW and Indiana University, where he was one of few to study the Lakota language and graduated with a degree in anthropology. He traveled the country and lived in places from coast to coast, embracing variety in his work from organic flower farming to his last position as facilities director at Purdue University Fort Wayne.
He is survived by his wife, Brooke, and stepdaughter, Ella, who made his final years his happiest. He is also survived by his parents Steve and Jo Ann, brother Michael (Heather), sisters Darcey Palmer-Shultz (Michael Shultz) and Christa Palmer Lange (Zach Lange), as well as nieces Aubrey and Eve, and nephews Eli and Jude, and many, many dear friends. He is preceded in death by his dog and gentle companion, Buya.
A celebration of life will take place for family and friends at Promenade Park Foundation Pavilion on Saturday, October 29, 2022, from 1-4pm. In lieu of sending flowers, please bring flowers or plants to the celebration of life event to fill the space with Andrew’s loving spirit. Gifts may also be made in Andrew’s honor to environmental or nature organizations.
